A mountain fortress known as the “Castle of Mist”
Iwamura was built high on a mountain and is also called Kirigajo, or “Castle of Mist,” because mist often gathers here. Follow the layout of the main bailey, second bailey and outer bailey to see how ridges and valleys shaped its defences. Stone walls, wells and other remains survive today.
The six-tiered wall and varied stonework
The six-tiered wall on the northeast side of the main bailey is a distinctive feature of Iwamura Castle. The site has stonework in several styles, including rough-faced, roughly fitted and closely fitted masonry. The walls extend for about 1.7 km in total.
A steep stone path to the main bailey
The climb from the trailhead to the main bailey is about 800 m and steep. It takes about 20 minutes on foot from Iwamura History Museum at the foot of the hill. The route follows a stone path with uneven steps, so allow time for the walk and wear suitable footwear.
About an hour from Iwamura Station, with parking at the foot
The castle is about an hour on foot from Iwamura Station or a 20-minute drive from Ena IC via Route 257. At the foot of the hill, the Iwamura History Museum has free parking for around 50 standard cars; continue on foot from there to the main-bailey ruins. Plan for the steep trail beyond the parking area.
