Tools and films reveal how Tokoname pottery is made
The permanent exhibition explains how Tokoname pottery supported daily life through clay preparation, forming, firing and transport. Around three hundred of the 1,655 tools and products designated as an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property are displayed. Films show jar, pipe and teapot production, alongside models and tools for hands-on learning. Outdoor displays include terracotta, large jars and ceramic benches used at Expo 1970 in Osaka.
Sutemi Horiguchi’s architecture and historic pottery
The ceramic institute displays old Tokoname works, including large Heian- and Kamakura-period jars, together with pieces by masters from the Edo period onwards. Sutemi Horiguchi designed a building with daylight-admitting roof forms and broad eaves; the main building and entrance gate became nationally registered tangible cultural properties in 2023. Alongside the pottery, notice the light and materials within the exhibition spaces.
Seizan Tanigawa exhibition begins October 24
The museum’s special gallery is scheduled to present an exhibition on Tokoname master Seizan Tanigawa from October 24, 2026 to February 14, 2027. White- and red-clay teapots and celadon vessels introduce his work. A free panel discussion is scheduled in the second-floor lecture room on October 31, 15:30–16:45, followed by a curator’s gallery talk on November 14, 13:30–14:30.
Use the separate museum and institute addresses
The museum is at 4-203 Segi-cho, while the ceramic institute and training workshop are at 7-22 Okujo. Access from Tokoname Station is around thirty minutes on foot or five minutes by taxi. The listed bus approach is about seven minutes on foot from INAX Live Museum-mae on services toward Chita Handa Station. Both sites have parking; medium and large charter coaches need advance arrangements for a separate designated lot. Groups or visitors requesting staff explanations should submit a visit application in advance.
Combine Tokoname sights, stays, dining and parking
Combine a station-area stay at Hotel Route-Inn Tokoname Ekimae with food at ni:no on the walking route, using Tokoname Ceramics Hall Parking for Sakae-machi sightseeing. Tounomori’s museum and research institute also occupy separate addresses. Allow travel between the buildings and walking district around the 17:00 museum closing and café last orders.
