Himeji Castle lies north of the station, where a town walk leads through stone walls and gates to the main keep and West Bailey. Allow different amounts of time for exterior views or the paid area with slopes and steep stairs. From March 1, 2026, general entry for ages 18+ is ¥2,500, or ¥1,000 for people with an address in Himeji. Check age-based free entry, residency proof and digital-ticket terms. Conservation work around the Ni Turret and water gates is planned through around late July 2027, affecting routes and views. Match special-display dates and the day’s visiting route to castle-town food and station lodging.

Explore the main keep and West Bailey through gates and stone walls
Look beyond the keep to bends in the paths after each gate and the curves of stone walls. Choose the main-keep route or West Bailey, Hyakken Corridor and Kesho Turret around the day’s open areas and your mobility. The reconstructed Senhime and Tadatoki costumes are displayed October 1–30, 2026 in the West Bailey/Kesho Turret. The display has no additional fee, but castle admission is required. The Hyakken Corridor entrance closes at 16:30; leave time for it before last admission.
Choose general or resident tickets and age-based free-entry proof
Separate ¥2,500 general entry for ages 18+ from ¥1,000 entry for people with an address in Himeji. Free entry includes under-18s and those through the first March 31 on or after reaching 18. Counter residency checks use eligible official documents such as My Number cards or driving licences; age checks also list student IDs. Digital resident/age checks require My Number cards, and digital tickets do not handle the discount for groups of at least 30. Eligible disability certificate holders and assistants also have free-entry conditions. Match your ticket and proof beforehand. A timed ticket does not guarantee priority sightseeing inside, and some periods may have no same-day ticket sales.
Match conservation through 2027 to 16:00 last entry
The July 30, 2026 work notice gives a planned period of early July 2026–around late July 2027. Scaffolding surrounds the Ni Turret, Water Gates One/Two and nearby walls; part of Bizenmaru stores materials, with narrowed route sections and construction-vehicle access. Views around the main keep and night illumination are also affected. Follow the current route without assuming older photographs show today’s view. Normal hours are 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00, with windows and other building features closing progressively from 16:30. Normal closed dates are December 29–30; check display suspensions and temporary year-end changes separately.
Allow for the station walk, castle stairs and evening colour programmes
Access is about 20 minutes on foot from JR or Sanyo Himeji Station, or five minutes after a north-exit bus to Otemon-mae. The castle lists a normal visit of about 90–120 minutes, separate from walking there. Slopes and steep, narrow stairs are common; keeps and turrets have no lifts. Independent wheelchair visits are not possible; ask management about reaching the area near the keeps with two or three experienced assistants. Collect the shoulder bag used for shoes and other belongings, choosing a route that suits your footing and luggage.
The October 2026 programme lists exterior lighting from sunset to midnight and 15-minute seasonal sequences from 20:00 and 21:00. October 16 has green and October 20 blue lighting, except those two 15-minute periods use white. Evening exterior viewing differs from keep admission; designated Sannomaru Square areas close 00:00–05:00.
Continue from the castle to north-side food and south-side lodging
Choose Otemon Parking for a castle car base, Shusantei Nadagiku Kappatei for north-side food and Hotel Nikko Himeji for south-side lodging. All are in Himeji at distinct Honmachi, Higashiekimaecho and Minamiekimaecho sites. Match keep waiting, walking or buses back towards the station, the shop’s weekday lunch L.O.13:30 and closed dates to hotel check-in, deciding whether to leave or move the car.
