Wollastonite and two National Treasure buildings
Tradition dates the foundation to 747 under Roben at Emperor Shomu’s request. Distinctive wollastonite rocks, designated a Natural Monument, stand beneath the pagoda and relate to the temple’s name. Both the main hall and pagoda are National Treasures. Their roofs, the rock formations and seasonal vegetation add a visual dimension to the temple’s literary and pilgrimage history.
Choose grounds, inner-hall and treasury tickets
