The Nakasendo Hiroshige Museum of Art presents ukiyo-e by Utagawa Hiroshige and artists who carried on his name. In autumn 2026, an exhibition marking Hiroshige II’s 200th birthday explores the “Hiroshige spirit” by comparing his prints with works by the first Hiroshige and later artists. Visitors can also try layered printing in the museum.

The name Hiroshige across generations
Because ukiyo-e prints are sensitive to light and heat, the museum rotates works for exhibitions rather than keeping a permanent display. The autumn 2026 special exhibition centres on the second Hiroshige, who inherited the first artist’s name, and compares his work with prints by the first Hiroshige, Kobayashi Kiyochika and Kawase Hasui. All works change between the first and second parts.
Two display periods through December 6
The exhibition runs from October 1 to December 6, 2026. The first part ends November 3; the second runs November 7–December 6, with the museum closed November 4–6 for the display change. The museum is closed Mondays, except public holidays, and also closes October 13 and November 24.
Try a layered-printing technique
In the second-floor Ukiyo-e navigation room, visitors can layer colours using resin plates modelled on printing blocks, stamp ink and a baren rubbing pad. Three formats are available, including postcard, B5 and B4 sizes; designs change with each exhibition. Visitors can take their finished print home.
Five-minute walk from Ena Station; two nearby parking options
The museum is about a five-minute walk south of JR Ena Station and a five-minute drive from Ena IC. It has no dedicated parking; the Ena Station West car park and adjacent Nakao lot each offer 90 minutes free for museum visitors. Standard admission is ¥520 for a planned exhibition or ¥820 for a special exhibition; visitors aged 18 or younger are free. Admission is free all day on Wednesdays and Fridays through March 2027 when the museum is open.
