黒田如水から奥平家へ
山国川の河口に築かれた中津城は、黒田孝高（如水）が築城を始めた城です。現在の天守は1964年に再建され、奥平家に伝わる衣装、刀剣、陣道具、古絵図や文書などを展示しています。町歩きの前に展示を見ると、中津を治めた人々の歴史と城下町の姿を結びつけられます。
新しい庭園と天守の花
2026年1月に完成披露式典が開かれた庭園は、石原和幸の設計です。ツバキ、桜、アジサイなどを植え、季節ごとに異なる花を楽しむ構成になっています。天守内にはアートフラワーの装飾もあり、歴史資料と花を組み合わせた展示空間を歩けます。
料金と入場のルール
中学生以上は飲み物付きで1,000円、小学生以下は無料です。ただし、学校・幼稚園・保育園の引率団体は子どもも飲み物付き500円となります。高齢者・団体・障害者・JAFの割引はありません。小学生だけの入城はできず保護者の同伴が必要です。外からの飲食物、ペットの持ち込みは禁止で、敷地内は電子たばこを含め禁煙です。
駅から歩く・車で訪れる
JR中津駅から徒歩約15分です。車の場合は中津公園の無料駐車場を利用できます。城は9～17時、入場は16時30分までなので、展示と庭園を回る時間を考えて到着します。城下町の寺町や中津市歴史博物館などと組み合わせれば、徒歩で歴史をたどる一日になります。

From Kuroda Josui to the Okudaira family
Kuroda Yoshitaka, also known as Josui, began building Nakatsu Castle at the Yamakuni River mouth. Rebuilt in 1964, the present keep displays clothing, swords, military equipment, old maps and documents associated with the Okudaira family. Seeing the collection before exploring the town gives context to its history.
The new garden and flowers inside the keep
The garden, designed by Kazuyuki Ishihara, was inaugurated in January 2026. Camellias, cherry trees, hydrangeas and other plants bring flowers through the seasons. Artificial floral decorations also frame the exhibits inside the keep, pairing historical objects with colorful arrangements.
Admission prices and visitor rules
Admission is ¥1,000 from junior-high age and includes a drink; younger children normally enter free. Children in teacher-led school or preschool groups pay ¥500, including a drink. There are no senior, group, disability or JAF discounts. Elementary pupils must be accompanied by a guardian. Outside food and drink, pets and smoking, including electronic cigarettes, are prohibited.
Walk from the station or arrive by car
The castle is about fifteen minutes on foot from JR Nakatsu Station. Drivers can use free parking at Nakatsu Park. The castle opens 09:00–17:00, with entry until 16:30; arrive with enough time for the exhibits and garden. Combine the visit with the temple district or Nakatsu History Museum for a day exploring local history on foot.
