Nikko Toshogu enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu in Sannai, Nikko City. Plan the sequence of buildings and steps from Yomeimon’s carvings and the stable’s Three Monkeys to the Sleeping Cat and Okumiya. Separate single-ticket coverage from the treasure museum and arrive before the earlier reception cutoff from November. Ryokan and a historic restaurant lie around the shrine-and-temple district, but Toshogu admission does not cover other shrines/temples or every building interior. Match festival/repair notices and footing to the carvings and routes you want to explore.

Walk through Yomeimon and carvings toward Ieyasu’s shrine
Much of the shrine complex dates to the 1636 rebuilding, combining terrain-following paths, steps and carved buildings. The sacred stable’s monkey panels depict stages of life; compare scenes around the famous Three Monkeys. Human figures and stories feature at Yomeimon, while the Sleeping Cat marks the route through the eastern corridor toward Okumiya. Allow time and energy for the ascending steps rather than treating every location as equally easy to reach. Separate viewing exteriors from the areas actually open inside.
Choose single admission separately from museums
Individual single admission costs ¥1,600 for adults/high-school students or ¥550 for elementary/junior-high pupils. It covers generally open areas including Omotemon, Yomeimon, the worship hall/Ishinoma, Sleeping Cat, Okumiya and Honjido’s Roaring Dragon. The individual treasure-museum set costs ¥2,400/¥870; that museum alone is ¥1,000/¥400. The art museum has a separate ticket. Single-ticket groups of 35 or more pay ¥1,440/¥495; individual visitors do not qualify by default. Check personal disability-discount categories and evidence at the counter without assuming companions are universally free.
Separate winter admission and audio-guide cutoffs
Admission hours are April 1–October 31, 9:00–17:00, or November 1–March 31, 9:00–16:00; reception ends at 16:30/15:30 respectively. Arriving at closing misses admission. Japanese, English and Chinese audio guides are listed at ¥500 per day. Their desk straight ahead after Omotemon accepts loans 9:00–16:00 April–October or 9:00–15:00 November–March, earlier than admission reception. Individual users need no reservation, while groups are asked to notify their planned use beforehand. Allow for the chosen language and return procedure.
Match festivals, repairs and stepped access
Festivals, ceremonies and repair work may restrict parts of the visit. Annual events list ritual mounted archery on October 16 and the autumn festival/procession on October 17, but use current notices for times and viewing arrangements rather than assuming every area remains normally open. Wheelchair guidance has a limited scope, such as Omotemon to the stairs before Yomeimon; it does not establish a step-free route to Okumiya. Discuss entrances, assistance and avoiding steps with the shrine office, allowing for winter footing and reception closing.
Connect the Yasukawacho ryokan, historic dining and municipal parking
Nikko Senhime Monogatari is a Yasukawacho ryokan whose room semi-open-air baths are not hot springs, separately from the communal baths. Meiji-no-Yakata in Sannai does not accept lunchtime table reservations. Nikko Municipal Nishisando Parking No. 1 lists 24-hour use under different charges from Toshogu’s own lot. Allow walks from Omotemon and steps to meals and lodging; this local circuit does not include separate journeys to Kinugawa or Oku-Nikko.
