The Pottery Footpath explores the ceramic-industry landscape on hills near central Tokoname. Brick chimneys, dark-walled workshops and retaining walls made from pipes and shochu bottles stand among craft shops and cafes. Choose the shorter Route A or extend the walk to museums on Route B according to the time available.

Pipe-lined slopes and a town of chimneys
Route A links Dokan-zaka, the climbing kiln and Takita House, tracing pottery production and everyday life. Dokan-zaka’s walls use Meiji-period pipes and early Showa shochu bottles, while discarded firing rings are reused in the paving. The climbing kiln has eight firing chambers and ten chimneys on a slope. Ceramic cats and the giant guardian cat Tokonyan also feature on the approach from the station.
Allow extra time for museum visits on Route B
The listed walking times are around one hour for Route A’s 1.6 km and two and a half hours for Route B’s 4 km. Route B extends to INAX Museums and Tounomori. Gallery visits, meals, shopping and pottery activities add to the total time. Local guides also offer an approximately ninety-minute Route A walk, with indicative fees of ¥1,500 for one to five people and ¥3,000 for six or more, with one guide per fifteen visitors.
Information desk hours and individual closures
The tourist information desk inside the Ceramics Hall opens 9:00–16:30 except during the year-end holiday. Maps are available, and luggage storage has limited capacity. The gallery and rest space close at 16:00, and stored bags are also listed for collection by 16:00. Takita House, the climbing-kiln workshop building and shops along the route follow their own opening hours and closure days.
Leave the car outside the narrow residential route
The Ceramics Hall starting point is around five minutes on foot from Tokoname Station. Drivers can use Pottery Footpath parking at 7-7 Sakae-machi, with around forty-five spaces at ¥300 per space for eight hours, or the Ceramics Hall lot at 3-8 Sakae-machi, with around forty spaces at ¥500 per car per day. Route A is too narrow for through traffic. Homes and workshops remain in use, so stay on public paths without entering private land or looking into homes.
Combine Tokoname sights, stays, dining and parking
Base the visit at station-area Hotel Route-Inn Tokoname Ekimae, eat from Tokoname pottery at Tokonameya, or leave a car at Pottery Footpath Parking before visiting workshops and narrow lanes on foot. Meals and exhibition stops extend the outing beyond pure walking time, so choose a route around lunch and stay arrangements.
