Takita House recalls Tokoname’s maritime trade alongside its pottery industry. This restored residence belonged to a family engaged in coastal shipping from the Edo period into early Meiji. Lamps, a ship model and a garden sound feature provide an indoor heritage stop along the Pottery Footpath.

A maritime family residence and a rapeseed-oil lamp
Built around 1850, the residence was restored by Tokoname City and opened to visitors in April 2000. Its mujin-to lamp uses rapeseed oil and has finely made copper and brass components. A one-fifteenth-scale model of an eight-hundred-koku cargo ship recalls trade linking Ise Bay with Edo and the Kyoto–Osaka region. The garden also contains a suikinkutsu, where water drops resonate inside a buried jar.
Admission is ¥300; junior-high pupils and younger children enter free
The house opens 9:30–16:30 with admission of ¥300. Groups of twenty or more pay ¥200 per person, and junior-high pupils and younger children enter free. Wednesdays are closed unless they are public holidays. Toilets, free Wi-Fi and an air-conditioned free rest room are available. Combine the displays with time on Dokan-zaka and the surrounding workshop streets.
Painting exhibition through October 25 and weekend music
The History and Art at Takita House 2026 painting exhibition runs October 19–25, 2026 in the detached building and storehouse-front space, 9:30–16:00. The house is closed on Wednesday, October 21. No additional exhibition charge applies, but normal house admission is required. Live music is also scheduled around midday on October 24 and 25. The painting exhibition finishes at 16:00, before the house’s normal 16:30 closing.
Walk from Tokoname Station and arrange kimono use ahead
The house is around ten minutes on foot from Tokoname Station. General motorists use nearby paid parking, while parking for disabled visitors requires advance arrangements. The kimono walk uses a two-piece garment worn over clothes, with changing at the Dokan-zaka rest building. Normally apply at least three days in advance, then check in and pay at Takita House before going to the changing venue. Reception is 10:00–14:00, return is by 15:30, and the experience including a walk takes around one and a half to two hours.
Combine Tokoname sights, stays, dining and parking
Combine a stay at Spring Sunny Hotel Nagoya Tokoname with a meal at Tokonameya in the walking district. Pottery Footpath Parking is an option for parking before exploring on foot. Plan around Takita House’s 16:30 closing and the 15:30 kimono-return time when arranging nearby stops.
