A foundation tradition praying for lake safety
The temple’s formal name is Kaimonzan Mangetsu-ji, belonging to the Daitoku-ji branch of Rinzai Buddhism. Tradition attributes its foundation to Eshin Sozu Genshin during the Heian period, in prayer for safety on the lake and salvation. The present hall was rebuilt in 1937 after the Muroto Typhoon destroyed its predecessor in 1934, connecting an old religious tradition with later reconstruction.
Katata’s famous scene and the Kannon hall
The Returning Geese at Katata is one of the Eight Views of Omi, associated with the hall projecting over the lake. In the temple grounds, the Kannon hall houses a seated Sho Kannon designated an Important Cultural Property. Look beyond the waterfront silhouette to appreciate the site as both a celebrated landscape and a place of worship.
Visits from eight and shorter December hours
Visits run 08:00–17:00 daily, with an earlier 16:30 finish in December. Admission is ¥300, reduced to ¥280 for groups of thirty or more. These hours suit an early visit and help plan shorter winter days. Allow time for the temple grounds and Kannon hall alongside the lakeside view.
