A monks’ retreat and its landscaped garden
Satobo were homes built at the foot of the mountain for Enryakuji monks in retirement. They form a distinctive part of Sakamoto’s historic streets. Southwest of the main house, around 3,300 m² of gardens use the natural terrain for hills and cascades. Look from the building across the garden toward the mountain scenery.
Stream scenery and the Amanogawa tea house
The garden brings water from the Omiya River into a composition of stones, trees and the borrowed mountain landscape. Two tea houses and an arbor stand within it. The thatched small tea room has the unusual Amanogawa layout, with two entrances and guests arranged on either side of the host. Paid use of the larger Horai tea room is separate from an ordinary sightseeing visit.
Standard admission and city-resident concessions
Admission is ¥330 for adults or ¥160 for elementary pupils, reduced to ¥260/¥130 for groups of fifteen or more. Otsu residents aged sixty-five+ pay ¥220, while city residents with disabilities have free entry with one carer. A ¥400 combined ticket for the Former Chikurin-in and Kunin Yashiki is sold at both properties and the Sakamoto Tourist Information Centre.
