Compare the honjin with an ordinary travellers’ inn
The honjin preserves the Baba family residence, which served high-ranking travellers from 1807 to 1870, with restored main rooms, entrance, reception wing and storehouse. Adjacent Seimeiya belonged to the Kurahashi family, who ran an ordinary inn from the late Edo period into Meiji. Museum displays focus on the Tokaido, Futagawa-shuku and the honjin, with activities such as printmaking and sugoroku games introducing travel culture.
Admission after the April change and the autumn exhibition
From April 1, 2026, admission is ¥500 for general visitors and ¥100 for elementary through high-school pupils, with preschool children free. Advance tickets cost ¥400 or ¥80 and become valid the next day; the same rates apply to groups of at least thirty. The Taisho-era Tokaido exhibition runs October 10–November 23 with normal museum admission, exploring how modern painters and cartoonists represented the old road.
Last entry at 16:30 and the November 1 procession
The museum opens 9:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30. A public-holiday Monday opens, followed by closure on the next weekday. Year-end closure is December 29–January 1. On November 1, 2026, the Honjin Festival is scheduled for 10:00–15:30, including the daimyo procession from 13:00 to 15:15. Traffic restrictions apply from 11:00 to 16:00 along the old Tokaido between Futagawa Hospital and the area around Futagawa Hachimansha, changing normal local access.
Walk from Futagawa Station or use the appropriate car park
The museum is around one kilometre east of Futagawa Station’s north exit, roughly a fifteen-minute walk. Drivers approach about 500 metres north from the Futagawa-cho Nishi-mukaiyama junction on Route 1. Parking is free for one hundred vehicles. Large and medium buses must use Futagawa-shuku Large Parking Lot, about five minutes away on foot, because large vehicles cannot use the old Tokaido. Small minibuses can park beside the museum. Admission at the counter can be paid by credit card or transport electronic money.
Other places to visit in Toyohashi
After Futagawa-shuku, consider Hotel Associa Toyohashi when returning to Toyohashi Station and Spagettei Ciao Honten for a Hirokoji meal. Park 500 is an option when driving into the centre. Allow rail or car travel from the museum, and account for the November 1 road restrictions in the old post town.
