Compare regions and ways of making sound
Around 1,500 items include instruments from Asia, Japan, Oceania, Africa, the Americas and Europe. Keyboards, Japanese-made Western instruments and electronic instruments reveal different forms and ways of producing sound.
Combine listening and hands-on discovery
Listening stations let you hear instrument sounds, while a designated hands-on room offers instruments and sound-making objects to try. Displayed collection objects are not all available for playing; follow the signs for hands-on areas. Set a departure time before exploring if you have a restaurant or train reservation.
Check admission and Wednesday closures
Standard admission is ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for high-school students; younger children and visitors aged seventy or over enter free. Regular closures fall on the second and fourth Wednesday, moving to the next day after a public holiday. August has no regular Wednesday closures, but year-end and inspection closures are separate. Special exhibitions may have an additional charge.
Plan the station walk or paid parking
Allow about ten minutes on foot from JR Hamamatsu Station’s north exit. There is no dedicated car park; paid options include Act City underground parking and Eki-kita Parking. Budget separately for parking, including the walk both ways. Lake Hamana is a separate outing from the station area, so check transport and travel time before combining them.
Combine the museum with dining and a stay
Consider Okura Act City Hotel Hamamatsu for a stay and Unagi Atsumi in Chitose-cho for a meal. Drivers can check the time-based charges at municipal Eki-kita Parking. If using an Atsumi queue ticket, work back from the assigned return time before deciding how much museum time is practical.
