Kusakabe Folk Museum combines a merchant house demonstrating Hida carpentry with folk craft in its storehouses. Large red-pine beams, an open interior and hearth connect the structure with everyday living. Alongside regular closure days, normal visits are suspended October 15–18, 2026 for special performances.

Examine the rebuilt house and its carpentry
Rebuilt by Kawashiri Jisuke in 1879 after the 1875 fire, the house became a national Important Cultural Property in 1966. A roughly thirteen-metre red-pine beam and an opening rising through three storeys are highlights. Move from the overhead carpentry to the hearth and Buddhist altar to connect the building’s substantial structure with the spaces used in daily life.
Folk craft in the storehouses and visiting time
The storehouses display folk-craft objects alongside the house visit. Compare the shapes of everyday utensils with the rooms and storage spaces surrounding them. A visit takes around thirty minutes, with tea and rice crackers offered. Photography is generally allowed. Even as part of a wider walk through the historic streets, allow time to settle into the interior and examine the objects.
Age-based prices and the October suspension
Admission is ¥1,000 adults, ¥500 high-school students, ¥300 elementary/junior-high pupils and free for preschoolers. Groups of thirty receive ¥900/¥450/¥250 rates. A disability certificate gives half-price entry to its holder and one companion. Opening is 10:00–16:00, with Tuesday closure shifting after a public holiday. Normal visits pause October 15–18, 2026 for performances. University students pay the adult rate.
Arrive on foot and understand wheelchair access
The museum is at 1-52 Ojinmachi, about fifteen minutes from Takayama Station, and has no car park. A ramp allows wheelchair entry, but wheelchairs cannot be taken onto the raised tatami seating area. Consider the house’s changes in level when choosing viewing areas with companions. The museum visit focuses on the Kusakabe house and its folk craft; the neighbouring Taniya accommodation operates as a separate service.
