1. A city shaped by the river
The first-floor introduction explores the natural environment of the Shimanto River and its tributaries, together with local life, history and culture. Objects, illustrations, video and hands-on exhibits introduce the region.
The museum places the river in the context of fishing, transport, farming and the development of the town. Its local-history collections provide a different focus from the nature-centred exhibits at Akitsuio.
2. Historical collections and changing exhibitions
The second floor houses the permanent-collection galleries, displaying historical documents and arts and crafts passed down in Shimanto City. These collections relate to the history behind the town’s description as “Tosa’s Little Kyoto.”
The third floor is used for changing exhibitions drawn from archaeological, folk-life, ecological and other collections. Themes and exhibits change between programmes, and exhibition changes can entail temporary closures.
3. The sixth-floor observatory and moving around
The sixth-floor observatory looks across the city. It offers an elevated view of the riverside townscape and a way to relate the exhibitions to the layout of the town.
The museum brochure specifies lift access between floors one and three; it does not provide lift access to the sixth-floor observatory. A rest room and toilets are on the first floor.
4. Admission and free-entry categories
Individual admission is ¥440 for adults and ¥170 for high-school students. Groups of 20 or more pay ¥350 or ¥130, and annual passes cost ¥1,320 or ¥520 respectively. Special-exhibition charges may differ.
Entry is free for junior-high students and younger visitors and for people aged 65 or over. Free entry also covers holders of physical-disability certificates at grade 2 or more severe, rehabilitation certificates, or mental-disability certificates at grade 2 or more severe, each with one carer. Proof of age or the relevant certificate is presented at reception.
5. Hours and gallery rules
Normal opening is at 09:00, closing at 17:00 and last admission at 16:30. The museum closes each Wednesday and can have additional closures for exhibition changes, maintenance and similar work.
Photography is generally allowed except for objects marked otherwise, but flash, additional lighting, monopods, tripods and selfie sticks are prohibited. Eating and drinking inside are not allowed. Pets cannot enter, with exceptions for guide, assistance and hearing dogs.
6. From Nakamura Station to Tamematsu Park
The museum is at 2356 Nakamura in Tamematsu Park. Its access guide gives 2.7 km/about 40 minutes on foot or 3.6 km/about 12 minutes by taxi from Nakamura Station; the walking and driving routes have different distances.
Free Wi-Fi is available on floors one to three and six, using the network “40010museum.” When combining a riverside outing with the museum, Wednesday closure and last-admission time are useful planning limits.
