Yasunami Watermill Park brings together a countryside irrigation channel and restored waterwheels in Shimanto City. Local people maintain these visitor waterwheels as reminders of those once used to lift water from the Shikamura-mizo channel into rice fields. A walk here connects the history of water use with today’s rural landscape.

1. A waterway and its wheels
Waterwheels stand beside the channel, with fields beyond. This is an outdoor park for walking beside water and wooden wheels in a farming landscape, rather than a complex of buildings or indoor galleries.
Today’s wheels were installed for visitors and no longer serve as working pumps lifting water into the fields. Maintained by local people, they preserve a view of earlier rural life.
2. The Shikamura-mizo channel
The Shikamura-mizo channel carried water from a weir at Aso on the Ushiro River, a tributary of the Shimanto. The weir is 160 m long and 11 m wide, and the channel served the four villages of Aida, Yasunami, Saoka and Kotsuka. It reflects the system that distributed river water to farmland.
3. Hydrangeas and a seasonal walk
Hydrangeas are planted along the waterway. In their flowering season they add colour to the wheels; a walk in October 2026 instead centres on the fields, waterway and waterwheels themselves.
The park has two shelters for a pause beside the waterwheel landscape. The city also lists handwashing facilities and a vending machine.
4. Free viewing and facilities
Viewing is free, and free parking is available. Toilets include an accessible toilet with a baby-changing facility and a child toilet. This is a small outdoor stop centred on the wheels and waterway.
5. Access from Nakamura Station
The park is about 10 minutes by car from Nakamura Station. The city’s park listing gives the address as 5573 Yasunami and adjoining land, and provides an access map locating the park.
Working fields and irrigation channels surround the park. Visits use the park’s parking and walking areas, leaving farm entrances and access routes clear.
6. Visiting the park and waterwheels together
Yasunami Watermill Village is a continuous landscape of channel, wheels and park, rather than a series of separately ticketed displays. Comparing the water’s flow and the structure of the wheels connects the visit with farming on the Shimanto plain.
