Rice-sheet rolls with bean paste
Keeran wraps bean paste in a flat sheet made from steamed local non-glutinous rice. Its white outer layer and dark filling form a simple combination. The original shop sells the regional sweet throughout the year, alongside products such as Western-style cakes and rice crackers. Fresh shop purchases and shipped sweets have different storage arrangements.
Suwa Shrine and the Hideyoshi tradition
The shop traces the sweet to stalls at Suwa Shrine’s spring festival. Its name is traditionally linked to Hideyoshi saying he would not return until victorious after eating it during a prayer visit. Treat this as the local naming story, complementing exploration of Hamasaki’s shrine and festival history.
The one-day shelf life
Keeran is a fresh sweet made without preservatives and has a one-day shelf life. Match takeaway purchases to the day’s travel and eating schedule. Mail-order products ship frozen and are advertised to keep frozen for three months; that does not give fresh shop purchases the same shelf life.
The Hamasaki original and Kagami branch
The original shop is at 943 Hamasaki, Hamatama, listed as 8:30–19:30 daily. The separate Shinke branch is at 4734-40 Kagami, 10:00–18:00, closed Wednesdays. Select the original branch as the destination when visiting Hamasaki Beach and the town, and plan how long purchases will be carried.
Other stops to combine within Karatsu
Allow travel time between coastal Hamatama, Nanayama’s baths and the hills of Ouchi and Kyuragi. Combine sweet shopping, reserved river-fish meals or day bathing with seasonal scenery. Coordinate meal starts, bath admission times and weather-sensitive visits, including the return to central Karatsu accommodation or parking.
