Paysan bakes bread in a hand-built brick oven at Honjo on Oshima, using natural leaven and Japanese wheat. Bread sales run on Fridays and Sundays, while the cafe opens Friday through Sunday. The small island shop offers bread, burgers and sandwiches, with the visit planned around the different bakery and cafe days.

A hand-built oven and raisin leaven
The owner built the brick oven over about ten months after moving to Oshima with the family. House leaven is fermented from organic raisins, with wheat including Yumechikara from Hokkaido and Setokirara from Ehime. Wholemeal flour, rye and dried fruit add other choices, with the oven producing a crisp outside and moist interior.
Friday and Sunday bread sales
Bread is baked and sold on Fridays and Sundays. Website-listed loaves are joined by shop-only sweet breads and baked treats, with no extra bake after the day’s stock sells out. Request holds by the previous morning; email and fax requests are confirmed only once the shop replies. The cafe also opens Saturday, separately from bread-selling days.
Burgers and cafe time
The cafe opens Friday–Sunday 11:00–17:00, last orders 16:30. Choices include the Paysan burger with house tomato sauce and pickles, sandwiches, croque madame and honey toast. Burgers, sandwiches and drinks are also available to take away. As seating is limited, tables cannot be booked, even when bread has been reserved for collection.
Visiting the Honjo bakery
The bakery is at 477 Honjo, Yoshiumicho, with eight parking spaces and bicycle parking. Its address and schedule differ from the separate Bistro Paysan and accommodation property. Plan bread collection for Friday or Sunday, or cafe time for Friday through Sunday, from 11:00. Reserved shop bread should be collected by 17:00.
Other stops to combine within Imabari
Imabari extends from its mainland centre across islands including Oshima, Hakatajima and Omishima. These suggestions include other parts of the city, so allow bridge or boat travel between islands. Oshima-minami Interchange serves arrivals from Shikoku and Oshima-kita those from Honshu. For ferry-served Ushima or car-restricted Umashima, coordinate sailings or reserved transfers with accommodation arrival times.
