Look for thatched roofs and carvings
Tradition dates the shrine’s foundation to 806; the present buildings were erected in 1610–1613. Five structures became National Treasures in 2008. Steep thatched roofs and colored carvings combine local Kuma building traditions with Momoyama-period decoration. Notice the roof’s substantial form as you pass through the gate.
Explore Aoi no Mori museum
Designed by Kengo Kuma and completed in November 2023, the museum uses wooden roof louvers that echo the shrine’s thatching. Timber from Hitoyoshi Kuma and other notable sources forms the building. Permanent displays introduce the shrine’s history, cultural treasures and the surrounding region, pairing historic architecture with contemporary timber design.
Museum prices and facilities
The museum opens daily 09:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30. Admission is ¥500 for high-school age and above, or ¥300 for younger schoolchildren; groups of ten or more receive ten percent off. An elevator serves the second floor, but wheelchairs are not loaned. Multilingual audio guidance is accessed using the QR code on the reception leaflet.
