Kasashima, in northeastern Honjima, is a historic port-town district of Marugame, with townhouses nestled between the sea and low hills. Narrow lanes lead past lattice fronts, mushiko-mado windows and white patterned plaster walls, while public historic houses introduce Shiwaku architecture and daily life. Reach Honjima by boat from Marugame Port, then walk about 25 minutes, combining a streetscape walk with house visits subject to opening hours and admission charges.

1. Port-town houses and narrow lanes
Kasashima was designated a nationally important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings in 1985. Edo- and Meiji-period townhouses stand alongside buildings continuing the same traditions into the Taisho and early Showa periods, preserving an island port town’s character.
The winding, intersecting lanes include north–south Higashi-koji and Matcho-dori, running roughly parallel to the shore. A walk past latticework, mushiko-mado windows and patterned plaster storehouse walls can be combined with visits inside houses open to the public.
2. The preservation centre and free historic houses
The preservation centre occupies a historic house at 256 Kasashima. It introduces Shiwaku carpentry and old household objects such as lanterns. Admission is ¥200 for adults and free for junior-high students and younger visitors, with a 20% reduction for groups of 20 or more.
Across the street, Fureai-no-Yakata displays a model of the Kasashima district. It and the document archive offer free admission. The preservation centre’s paid admission is not a district-wide or combined-house ticket.
3. House hours, Monday closures and winter visits
The preservation centre opens 09:00–16:00 and closes on Mondays. If Monday is a public holiday, it opens and closes the following day instead. Plan time inside the buildings separately from a walk along the district’s streets.
The centre closes December 29–January 3. From January 4 through the end of February, it opens only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Interior visits to the centre are therefore unavailable on ordinary winter weekdays.
4. Boats and fares from Marugame Port
Marugame Port is about a 10-minute walk from JR Marugame Station. Honjima Kisen’s regular schedule has eight departures from each port daily, using ferries and passenger boats. For example, the 10:40 departure from Marugame reaches Honjima at 11:15, and the 17:10 departure from Honjima reaches Marugame at 17:40. Some services call at Ushijima.
Passenger fares are ¥560 one way or ¥1,070 return for junior-high age and older, and ¥280 or ¥540 for elementary-school children. One child aged one to preschool age travels free per adult; additional children pay the elementary-school fare. Babies under one travel free. House admission is not included in the boat fare.
5. Walking from the port and travelling with a vehicle
Allow about 25 minutes on foot from Honjima Port to the preservation centre. Include this transfer as well as time for the streets and public houses when fitting a visit between boat departures. The narrow lanes also contain residents’ homes.
Passenger-boat services do not carry cars, motorcycles or other vehicles. Vehicle spaces on ferries prioritise reservations, and boarding without a reservation may be unavailable. On the designated hazardous-cargo-priority sailings on the second and fourth Thursdays, passenger numbers are limited to 25 or fewer.
6. Passenger-fare-free days on the 20th
The passenger-fare-free day continues on the 20th of each month in FY2026. It covers passenger fares only, excluding vehicle carriage and baggage charges such as those for bicycles. A boarding ticket is still required, normally collected at the counter from 20 minutes before departure.
Tickets for the 19:30 departure from Honjima and 20:00 departure from Marugame are handled on board. On the specified 20th-day dates falling on weekends or public holidays, extra sailings depart Marugame at 13:20 and Honjima at 14:50, without vehicle carriage. The next listed extra-service date is December 20, 2026.
