1. Discover the history and skills of Marugame fans
Displays include fans and documents tracing Marugame fan history, along with models showing fan makers at work. Fans from other parts of Japan also introduce differences in shape, materials and use.
A demonstration area introduces traditional skills and production stages. Viewing displays and demonstrations or browsing the souvenir shop is separate from the reserved making workshop. Admission to the displays is free.
2. Choose a design and make a fan
For the workshop, choose a design from those provided, apply the paper to a bamboo frame and finish the fan. Traditional craftspeople or Marugame Uchiwa New Meisters guide participants through the work, including drying the paper and trimming the shape.
You cannot use your own cloth, hand-drawn paper or other brought-in covering materials. While waiting for the fan to dry, you can look around the museum’s displays of fans and tools.
3. Workshop fee and advance booking
The workshop costs ¥1,000 per fan and is for ages five and up. It usually takes about 40–50 minutes, with reception periods of 09:30–11:30 and 13:30–15:30. Reservations must be made by 15:30 on the previous day.
An official reservation page is available for individual bookings. Groups of five or more first telephone to check availability, then submit the group form by email or fax. Allow about 90 minutes for groups of roughly five or more.
4. Opening hours and closing-day exceptions
The museum opens 09:30–17:00, with entry until 16:30. It closes on Wednesdays, moving the closure to the following day if Wednesday is a public holiday. The New Year closure is December 29–January 3.
When combining a visit with Nakatsu Banshoen, note that the garden opens on public-holiday Wednesdays without a substitute closure, while the fan museum closes the following day. Each facility’s opening days and the fan workshop’s reserved time are separate arrangements.
5. Planning a family or group workshop
You can choose between free display viewing and a paid workshop for participants aged five and up. The workshop fee is per fan when families or groups make several.
The association also lists Uchiwa Kobo “Take,” a separate workshop inside Marugame Castle’s grounds. A booking for the museum in Nakazucho is at 25-1 Nakazucho, rather than at the castle.
6. Getting there and combining it with the garden
The museum is about 15 minutes on foot from JR Sanuki-Shioya Station or 10 minutes by bicycle from JR Marugame Station. By car, allow around 20 minutes from Sakaide Interchange or 17 from Sakaide-kita Interchange. Museum parking accommodates about 15 cars; large buses require prior arrangements.
The museum adjoins Nakatsu Banshoen, but free museum admission does not cover the garden’s paid areas. Allocating separate time for the workshop and a garden walk lets you combine crafts and garden culture in one day.
