Meet Otomo no Yakamochi and the Manyoshu
Otomo no Yakamochi came to Inaba as provincial governor in 758, and a poem he composed in 759 is placed last in the Manyoshu. Yakamochi Hall explores his life and poetry, connecting the anthology with this region. The story of the ancient provincial capital also adds context to travel around Kokufu.
Replicas help introduce old manuscripts and other materials connected with the anthology. Read labels to distinguish reproductions from original objects, rather than assuming that every displayed item is an original manuscript. The explanations offer an entry point even for visitors new to early Japanese poetry.
Explore folk performance and the garden
Displays also introduce regional performing traditions, including Kirin lion dancing and umbrella dancing. Looking beyond the age of the Manyoshu to expressions passed down through later community life gives a broader view of Inaba’s culture.
Plants associated with Manyoshu poetry grow in the Manyo and Mythology Garden, linking the written works with a living landscape. The garden is in the paid area, while the 30 m viewing tower is listed as free. Check reception arrangements for the places you want to enter rather than assuming that the whole outdoor area is free.
Normal concessions and temporary exhibitions
Normal adult admission is ¥300, or ¥240 per person in groups of at least 20. High-school students and younger visitors and people aged 65 or older enter free; bring proof of age. Some exhibitions have separate charges; check the individual exhibition guide for the applicable conditions. Check documentation and carer limits for disability-related concessions.
An exhibition rediscovering the Ikeda family tombs and their inherited history of prayer is scheduled in the folk-life gallery for October 31–December 13, 2026. It is included in normal admission, including the usual free entry for high-school students and younger visitors and people aged 65 or older. Museum admission is also free on November 14 and 15 for Kansai Culture Day. Check individual event notices for any separate participation or material charges.
Travel by bus or car
From Tottori Station stop 8, take a Hinomaru bus toward Nakagawara for about 20 minutes. The operator lists a 1-minute walk from Inaba Manyo Rekishikan and an 8-minute walk from Inaba Manyo Rekishikan Iriguchi. Check which stop your service uses and the return timetable, as the walking distance differs.
A taxi from Tottori Station takes about 20 minutes. Free parking is listed for 100 ordinary cars and 10 buses; these are different vehicle allocations, not 110 car spaces. Groups should ask in advance about vehicle and visit arrangements.
Guided visits and exploring nearby
Guided visits cost ¥1,000 per guide and should be requested about a week in advance. This booking requirement concerns the guide rather than ordinary individual entry. Free loan bicycles are listed for 9:00–16:30; check availability and the day’s arrangements before relying on one.
The museum closes on Mondays unless they are public holidays, and on the next weekday after a public holiday. The year-end break is December 29–January 3. Last admission is 16:30, half an hour before closing, so arrive with enough time if you want to see both galleries and the garden. Check weather and current notices when combining indoor and outdoor areas.
