See Tottori through a large map
A large 1:25,000 terrain model and a small theatre help visitors understand the area’s geography and history. The model was produced using information from 2000, so it is an exhibit rather than an up-to-date map for finding roads or facilities. Comparing its view of the city with the present adds another way to read the display.
The basement has a free learning area, separate from the paid galleries. Distinguishing time in the exhibitions from time exploring local information makes it easier to plan a short visit around your interests.
Normal admission and age concessions
Adult admission to the permanent and themed exhibitions is ¥300, with free entry for high-school students and younger visitors. Special exhibitions normally charge adults ¥500, although individual events and organizers may set different terms. Check documentation and organizer-specific conditions for disability and carer concessions.
The current HOT Triangle cooperation between Tottori, Okayama and Himeji extends the usual 70-plus free-entry rule to visitors aged 65 and older. Bring proof of age. Do not assume that the same concession applies to an exhibition run by an outside organizer; check the terms for the display you plan to enter.
Autumn 2026 exhibitions
The special exhibition on illness and death, covering COVID-19, influenza and disease in ancient and medieval times, runs in the first-floor special gallery from September 19 to October 25,2026. Adult admission is ¥500. Its focus is historical experience of disease.
The following exhibition introducing newly designated cultural properties of Tottori Prefecture is planned for November 7–December 20,2026, with free viewing in the first-floor special gallery. This does not establish free admission to every other gallery. Check changeover arrangements and available areas when visiting near the start or end of an exhibition.
The red Kururi route and two parking areas
The museum is about 25 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by taxi from JR Tottori Station. The red Kururi bus takes about 20 minutes to Ochidani Park / Yamabikokan-mae, immediately beside the museum. This differs from the green-route stop serving the prefectural museum, so check your destination before boarding.
The free first lot has 24 ordinary-car spaces,2 accessible spaces and 2 bus spaces. It operates 9:00–17:00 and is locked at 17:00. The second has 34 ordinary-car spaces and 1 accessible space, with entry 6:00–20:00. After 20:00, exit requires contacting the management company shown on site; it is not an unrestricted 24-hour lot. Buses require booking by the previous day.
Before combining your visit with a park walk
When combining the museum with a walk in Ochidani Park, respect the lots’ visitor-use rules. Nearby shrine parking and roadside space should not be treated as museum parking. Return before closing if you have left your vehicle in the first lot.
Closures generally fall on Mondays and days after public holidays, with exceptions when dates overlap weekends or other holidays. The year-end closure is December 29–January 3, and maintenance closures may also occur. Check current notices for the day’s opening and gallery availability, rather than treating an old maintenance notice as a future closure.
