Kikuma tile history and manufacturing
Displays follow more than 750 years of Kikuma tile making, with models recreating production during the flourishing Meiji period. The second-floor permanent exhibition combines a historical scroll and tools to explain the industry’s development. A tile lantern that served as a navigation light for around 170 years connects the craft to local maritime life.
Festival reliefs and expressive tile work
A large first-floor tile relief depicts Kikuma Festival’s running horses. Sculptural craft and expressive ornamental tiles can be examined at close range. Tiles exposed to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima also form part of the displays, their heat-altered surfaces preserving historical evidence.
Making objects with roof-tile clay
The adjacent Nendo de Asobo workshop uses roof-tile clay for flowerpots, animals, ornamental tiles, handprints and other original designs. Registration closes at 15:00. In addition to the production charge, a worktable costs ¥210 for each hour or part thereof, or ¥310 with heating or cooling. Workshop costs are separate from museum admission.
