A changing view of Domon's life's work
Opened in October 1983, the museum holds around 135,000 items by Ken Domon. Changing displays introduce series including Pilgrimage to Ancient Temples, Hiroshima, Children of Chikuho, Bunraku and portraits. His subjects range from religious architecture to society and individual faces. The museum adopted its current Japanese name in April 2025. Exhibitions offer different perspectives on the collection rather than displaying every work at once.
The pond, architecture and artistic friendships
Taniguchi designed the building in close relationship with the park's woodland, pond and views toward Mount Chokai. Isamu Noguchi contributed a courtyard sculpture and bench, Hiroshi Teshigahara created the garden work Nagare, and Yusaku Kamekura designed the entrance plaque. These works make the surroundings part of the visit and reflect Domon's artistic friendships. A museum shop is also located inside.
Photographs and words from October 17
From October 17, 2026 to January 17, 2027, an exhibition based on Domon's late essay collection On Dying and Living brings photographs and writing together. It runs alongside the 45th Ken Domon Award exhibition, Kazuo Nagahashi's photographs of Tibet's Potala Palace. Admission for this period is ¥900 for adults and ¥450 for high school students; junior high school children and younger enter free.
