Permanent displays on relations across the sea
The second-floor permanent displays follow relations between the Japanese archipelago and Korean Peninsula from prehistory to modern times. Sections before, during and after Nagoya Castle examine the invasions of Korea, Korean diplomatic missions and figures such as Amenomori Hoshu. Gold-leaf tiles and ceramics from the castle and daimyo camps connect local archaeology with both war and exchange.
The reconstructed Golden Tea Room
Reconstructed from historical sources, the golden room represents the portable tea room Hideyoshi brought to Nagoya in 1592. Gold and red surround a three-tatami space once used for tea gatherings and diplomatic receptions. Viewing is free. Applications for the Golden Tea Room experience programme are suspended while it is reviewed; viewing the display and taking part in an experience have different arrangements.
An autumn exhibition marking a century of designation
A free exhibition from October 9 to November 29, 2026 marks one hundred years since the 1926 historic-site designation. The latest prefectural release lists thirty-one entries comprising ninety-five objects, including documents, maps, excavated finds and survey records. The second phase is planned November 3–29, with a free gallery explanation on November 3 at 15:00 for about fifteen minutes. Normal opening is 9:00–17:00, closed Mondays or the next weekday after holidays, and December 29–January 3.
The bus stop, approach slope and accessibility
The museum is about 300 metres, five minutes on foot, from Nagoya-jo Hakubutsukan Iriguchi bus stop; some buses from central Karatsu require a transfer. The free lot shared with the ruins has 58 car and six bus spaces, with a long slope to the entrance. Three accessible spaces beside the building connect by ramp. An indoor lift reaches the second floor, and three wheelchairs and two strollers are available to borrow.During Karatsu Kunchi, November 2–4, 2026, westbound routes including Yobuko, Minato/Hado-misaki and Nomoto/Nagoya-hama skip Karatsu Station and Oteguchi all day. Services use the temporary stop outside Showa Bus Karatsu depot at the Oteguchi timetable times. Check the route, boarding point and possible delays before travelling towards the museum.
Other stops to combine within Karatsu
Yobuko harbour, Kabe Island and Nagoya in Chinzei combine coastal meals with historical visits. Allow driving time around squid availability, restaurant reception hours and accommodation dinner starts. Harbour municipal parking and the museum’s shared lot serve different visits; choose parking for each stop and allow time to return towards Karatsu Station.
