Explore a garden originating as a merchant’s villa
The garden opened under Fukuoka City in 1995 on the site of a Meiji-era villa built by merchant Shimozawa Zenemon Chikamasa. Walk around the pond among moss and trees, listening for the suikinkutsu’s falling-water resonance. The close relationship between garden and tea rooms makes a compact pause for seasonal colour and water sounds during a city walk.
Tea-room sessions operate on scheduled dates
The tea-room session pairs matcha and original dry sweets with a view of the tea garden. It costs ¥1,100 per person, with same-day reception on scheduled dates. Each session holds eight people for about thirty minutes, starting at 10:00, 10:40, 11:20, 14:00, 14:40 or 15:20. Preschoolers cannot enter this session, and photography during it is not permitted.
Separate garden entry from tea-room use
Garden entry is ¥100 adults, ¥50 elementary/junior-high pupils and free for preschoolers, reduced to ¥80/¥40 for thirty-person groups. Document-based free admission covers eligible visitors with disabilities and carers, and residents aged sixty-five or over in Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, Kumamoto or Kagoshima. Hours are 09:00–17:00. Tuesday closure shifts after a holiday; December 29–January 1 is closed. January 2–3 and May 4–5 remain open.
Reach the Sumiyoshi garden and continue the walk
The address is 2-10-7 Sumiyoshi, about two minutes from TVQ-mae bus stop. Car parking costs ¥300 per visit, waived with the specified disability certificate when its holder drives or rides in the vehicle. Hiring a tea room for a gathering or practice requires separate application. Choose between ordinary garden entry, a scheduled tea session and reserved room use according to the visit.
