Modern art in a timber museum
The timber galleries show changing selections from about 2,200 Japanese paintings, oils, prints and drawings. Opened in October 1991, the museum marks its thirty-fifth anniversary in 2026. It adds time for art to an island drive focused on the sea. The nearby annex and Gohonjin art museum are separate exhibition venues whose programmes can be combined by interest.
Two phases of the anniversary collection
The anniversary exhibition’s first phase ran September 13–October 26, 2026; the operator now presents the second phase for October 28–December 7. The first phase included Taikan Yokoyama, Seiho Takeuchi, Kiyokata Kaburaki and Shinsui Ito; the second introduces Heihachiro Fukuda, Kaii Higashiyama, Yasushi Sugiyama and Tamako Kataoka. Works change between phases, presenting different parts of the collection and the development of Japanese and Western-style painting.
Admission and the four-site combination
Admission is ¥500, ¥300 or ¥200, with twenty-person group rates of ¥400, ¥240 or ¥160. Eligible local schoolchildren and disability-certificate holders enter free. The Ishidatami combination covers Shotoen, Rantokaku, Hakusetsuro and Sannose Gohonjin for ¥1,680 adults, ¥1,000 non-local high-school pupils or ¥660 younger pupils. The annex and insect house are outside that combination, offering group-rate entry on presentation of the pass.
Sannose bus stop and free parking
Open 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30, closed Tuesdays or the following day after a holiday. Buses from Hiro Station towards the islands stop at Sannose, a four-minute walk away. Drivers cross the tolled Akinada Bridge and use free civic-centre parking, listed with fifty spaces and bus access. A return-bridge ticket assistance scheme applies when the outward toll is paid in cash and at least ¥1,000 is spent at designated facilities.
Other stops to combine within Kure City
Kure extends from the central port to Kawajiri, Yasuura, Ondo, Kurahashi and the Tobishima islands. The links below introduce other types of city stops. For venues in different districts, allow driving or bus time as well as bridge tolls, last orders and accommodation arrival. Select parking by the area visited and its access conditions.
