Terraced fields at the foot of Mt. Nonobori
Sakamoto Rice Terraces lie at the foot of Mt. Nonobori in Asakayama-cho, Kameyama. They were selected among Japan’s 100 best rice terraces in July 1999. Paddies follow the slope, reflecting the farming and village life that shaped this rural landscape.
The colours and reflections change with the farming season. Plan a visit to enjoy the view as it is on the day rather than expecting a particular flower or harvest scene.
Ladder fields built with natural stone walls
Sakamoto is known for ladder fields, where paddies are supported by retaining walls built from natural stones of different sizes. From below, visitors can see the terraced plots and stonework together.
Local people continue to care for the farmland. Enjoy the view from appropriate paths and do not enter the paddies or interfere with farm work.
A viewpoint about ten minutes from the car park
The Sakamoto Agricultural Park viewpoint overlooks the rice terraces and is about a ten-minute walk from the Yamanoeki car park. The car park has around 30 spaces, a free toilet and a rest area.
There is also parking near the viewpoint, but the access road has narrow sections, so Kankomie recommends Yamanoeki. The lot can fill during autumn foliage and the March–April mitsumata flower season; allow extra time during busy periods.
About 30 minutes from the expressway ICs; use the car park
Allow about 30 minutes by taxi from JR Kameyama Station or by car from Suzuka or Kameyama IC on the Higashi-Meihan Expressway. Shops are limited near the terraces, so pick up drinks near the station or an interchange.
Roads around the fields serve the Sakamoto community. Roadside parking can obstruct traffic; use the designated car park and respect farmland and residents as you walk.
Combine sights, stays and dining in Kameyama
On a day walking to the Sakamoto Rice Terraces viewpoint, combine a city drive with a stay at Hotel Route-Inn Kameyama Inter and a meal at Kawamori Shokudo. Kameyama PA Lower Parking lower can also serve as an expressway stop; check its direction and parking arrangements when planning a break.
