See festival floats outside festival days
Seki Float Museum was established to preserve the floats, a local folk-cultural asset, and pass on the festival music. Its collection and exhibition building displays floats used in Seki-juku’s Gion Festival throughout the year.
Visitors can see the floats up close without waiting for the festival procession, adding local festival culture to a walk through the historic district.
Floats, portable shrines and festival records
The museum comprises four buildings: the main house, a detached house, a storehouse and the float exhibition building. Displays introduce the people behind Seki-juku’s streetscape and festival, alongside a portable shrine, float fittings and historical records.
Looking beyond the floats to the music and preparations helps explain how the community has kept the festival and its traditions going.
Single admission and a three-museum pass
Single admission is ¥300 for adults (¥250 for groups of 30 or more) and ¥200 for students and schoolchildren (¥150 for groups of 30 or more). A three-museum ticket including Hatago Tamaya History Museum and Seki Streetscape Museum costs ¥500 for adults (¥400 for groups of 30 or more) and ¥300 for students and schoolchildren (¥200 for groups of 30 or more).
The museum opens from 9:00 to 16:30. It closes on Mondays, or the following day when Monday is a public holiday, and from December 29 through January 3.
Combine the museum with a Seki-juku walk
The museum is at 531 Nakamachi, along the walk through Seki-juku. With a combined ticket, visitors can arrange their route around each museum’s closing time.
Drivers can start from the Seki-juku sightseeing car park and explore on foot. Respect traffic and photography etiquette in this residential district.
