Meet an entrepreneur who went abroad from Omori
Born in Omori in 1889, Yamashita studied at the former Sapporo Agricultural College before entering business. In 1914 he obtained a patent relating to edible film for medicines, later moving into international grain and steel trade. Following his path from a small local community into overseas enterprise offers another view of Yokote alongside its better-known castle-town and rural histories.
The petroleum-development chapter
He founded Nippon Yushutsu Sekiyu, a petroleum export company, in 1956, secured petroleum-development rights with Saudi Arabia the following year and reached production from the first well in 1960. This chapter brought the nickname Arabia Taro. The memorial traces that career, providing a setting to consider how overseas enterprise connected with Japan’s postwar industry and economy as well as the individual behind it.
A continuing connection with education
For twenty years from 1926 he contributed scholarships to Omori, and donated Yamashita Gakkan in 1936. After his death in 1967, educational support continued through the foundation established with his wife Fumiko’s backing. Encouragement of academic research and local culture remains part of its work. The museum therefore connects the businessman’s career with an enduring interest in education and his home community.
Reservations and practical access
Admission is free, with 09:00–17:00 opening. Weekends, public holidays and December 29–January 3 are normally closed, but opening can be arranged by reservation. A weekend itinerary therefore needs that arrangement in advance. Yokote-kita Smart IC is about twelve minutes away by car. Parking, a ramp, a wheelchair, toilets, nursing and baby-changing facilities support a stop before or after a local stay.
Other stops to combine within Yokote
The station area, Masuda/Jumonji, Hiraka, Omonogawa, Omori, Taiyu and Sannai involve different directions of travel. Combine sightseeing and meal deadlines with the intended accommodation arrival time. Related parking serves its own facility or area as a stopping point.
