Known locally as Yokote Castle, this hilltop observatory combines exhibitions on its first three floors with fourth-floor views of the town, river and basin. A visit can move between the castle-site park and the building’s displays, bringing local history and the surrounding landscape together in one elevated stop.

Look over the town and basin from the fourth floor
From the fourth floor, trace the Yokote River around Asakura Hill and look across the broad basin, with Mount Chokai visible in clear conditions. The first and third floors hold permanent displays and the second hosts changing exhibitions. The stop therefore combines scenery with local art and crafts, offering a higher perspective on places explored at street level and the mountains surrounding the town.
Explore the castle site and modern observatory
Tradition dates the castle’s construction by the Onodera family to around 1550; it was also called Asakura Castle or Nira Castle. It fell in the 1868 Boshin War, and the present observatory was erected in 1965 on the second enclosure. Akita Shrine occupies the former main enclosure, with a Honda Masazumi monument and peace Kannon elsewhere in the park. Explore the historic terrain alongside the modern viewing building.
The shared ticket and October landscape exhibition
Admission is ¥100 for high-school age and over, free for younger visitors. The ticket also covers Kamakura Museum, Kanazawa Gosannen War Museum and Ishizaka Yojiro Literary Museum on the same day. October 1–November 1, 2026 brings a second-floor exhibition of Yokote landscape paintings. Commemorative castle prints cost ¥300 at reception during opening periods, allowing art, souvenir and real views to form one visit.
Plan around seasonal opening
Regular hours are 09:00–16:30, April 1–November 30. The observatory closes December 1–March 31, with special openings during February’s kamakura festival. Both Yokote IC and Yokote-kita Smart IC are about fifteen minutes away by car; parking is available. As it closes earlier than Kamakura Museum, a shared-ticket itinerary may start here, allowing time for the surrounding park as well as the indoor visit.
Other stops to combine within Yokote
The station area, Masuda/Jumonji, Hiraka, Omonogawa, Omori, Taiyu and Sannai involve different directions of travel. Combine sightseeing and meal deadlines with the intended accommodation arrival time. Related parking serves its own facility or area as a stopping point.
