Exploring Yoshino in his home town
Yoshino Sakuzo was born in Furukawa in 1878 and died in 1933. The museum opened on his birthday, January 29, in 1995. Its single-storey building combines Taisho-inspired details with modern architecture. Family-donated belongings anchor permanent displays arranged in five sections, including his scholarly and journalistic work, bringing a familiar historical name into closer focus.
Minponshugi and engagement with society
In an influential 1916 essay, Yoshino developed minponshugi, arguing that government should give weight to the welfare and wishes of ordinary people. He advocated wider suffrage and party cabinets, becoming a central voice in Taisho democracy. The museum also considers his international exchanges, support for overseas students and social activities, connecting academic study with public engagement.
