Mochi inspired by silk
The confectionery business began in 1897 and introduced habutae mochi in 1905. Its connection with the textile trade inspired a sweet expressing the suppleness of Fukui silk. Thin white mochi combines rice flours from Kyoto’s Tanba area and Fukui with sugar and starch syrup. Its flat, delicate form differs from a filled daifuku.
Seasonal sweets in the main-store cafe
The cafe serves freshly made habutae mochi and dorayaki, using work by local ceramic artists. Seasonal choices include manually shaved ice in summer and mizu-yokan, traditionally eaten during Fukui’s winter. Monaka and dorayaki combine bean paste with mochi, offering other ways to experience the same confectionery tradition.
Cafe use and packaged souvenirs
Listed tax-inclusive packaged-mochi prices are ¥1,048 for six bags, ¥1,987 for twelve and ¥2,938 for eighteen. These are retail products rather than cafe drinks or set prices. The stated shelf life is ten days from production, useful when planning gifts around the return journey. Assortments also include monaka and dorayaki.
Shop hours and Thursday cafe closures
The main shop at 3-5-19 Chuo opens 09:00–18:00 and closes January 1. Its cafe opens 11:00–17:00, last order 16:30, and is currently closed Thursdays. The cafe does not start when retail opens at 09:00, and the Thursday rule applies specifically to the cafe. The branch in Kurufu Fukui Station is a different outlet; use the Chuo address for the main-store cafe.
