Yokokan Garden was a retreat of the Matsudaira lords of Fukui. Its strolling paths surround a pond beside a sukiya-style house, where visitors can sit in tatami rooms and look across the water. About fifteen minutes on foot from Fukui Station, it combines easily with the neighbouring city history museum for an introduction to the former castle town.

A garden experienced from paths and rooms
The Edo-period garden became a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty in 1982. During ordinary opening, the visit can include sitting in the house as well as following the garden paths. The close relationship of architecture and water creates different views from the tatami rooms and from across the pond. Some paths may close after sunset or in heavy snow.
Ordinary admission and free early garden access
Ordinary admission is ¥220, reduced to ¥160 for groups of at least twenty paying visitors. Junior-high pupils and younger, visitors aged 70 or over, and eligible disability-certificate holders and carers enter free. A ¥350 combination ticket covers the neighbouring museum’s ordinary displays; special exhibitions have separate prices. Free garden access runs 05:30–08:45 in April–August and 06:00–08:45 in September–October, through the east gate only. The house stays closed during these early hours.
Late-October restrictions and autumn events
On October 29, 2026, the house closes from noon; it remains closed throughout October 30–31 for a tea gathering, while the garden opens free. Ordinary paid entry applies before noon on October 29. Public autumn tea sessions take place 10:00–16:00 on weekends October 10–November 15, except October 31, with tea tickets sold until 15:30. Tea and a sweet cost ¥1,000 plus garden admission. Illumination runs 17:00–20:30 on Fridays, weekends and public holidays November 1–29, last entry 20:00.
Walking from the station and choosing a gate
