A longstanding shop in the Nitta area, Sukebeya serves Gunma's grilled manju speciality. Light, risen dough combines with a sweet glaze and browned surface. Visitors can distinguish freshly prepared food at the shop from souvenir products finished after returning home.

A longstanding Nitta-Kizaki speciality
Sukebeya has long made grilled manju in Nitta-Kizaki, with local tourism guides describing a history exceeding a century. Traditional preparation and the house glaze define its style. This Gunma speciality consists of risen buns threaded onto skewers, grilled and coated with a sweet-savoury sauce. It can form a snack during a walk through Kizaki or a regional food to take home. The visitor shop stands at 526-11 Nitta-Kizaki-cho.
Fermenting, steaming and grilling
Preparation begins with cooked rice and koji fermented for twenty-four hours at a warm, body-like temperature, then kneaded with wheat flour. Shaped buns rise naturally again in steam baskets before steaming. They are grilled over strong heat, glazed on both sides, grilled again and given another coating. The slowly reduced house sauce produces a dark gloss, contrasting with the soft risen dough and browned surface.
Souvenir buns finished at home
Souvenir products combine ungrilled buns with the house sauce. Twenty-four buns make six skewers, thirty-six make nine and forty-eight make twelve. At home, charcoal, an oven or a toaster can be used: warm the sauce, coat both sides and grill again. Re-steaming is another suggested preparation. These packs differ from freshly grilled shop servings because the finishing takes place at home, suitable for a gathering or as a food gift from Gunma.
Opening days and the Kizaki shop
Opening hours are 9:30–17:00, with Mondays closed and the closure moving to the following day after a Monday holiday. The shop name is Sukebeya Manju Sohonpo, at 526-11 Nitta-Kizaki-cho. Mail order is also offered, but sauce-inclusive ungrilled packs are distinct from orders of freshly cooked food at the shop. A daytime visit can be combined with historic sites in the Nitta and Ojima areas, adding a taste of the region's flour-based food traditions.
