This small museum connects the Ashikaga family’s roughly 270-year history in Hirashima with everyday life in the Nakagawa area. Built on the former residence site, it brings family-related material together with farming, fishing and household objects. Its Friday–Sunday and holiday opening determines when to include it in a Nakagawa itinerary.

Understand the Ashikaga family in Hirashima
Ashikaga Yoshifuyu established his Hirashima residence in 1534 as the first Awa Kubo. His son Yoshihide left for the Kinai region and became the fourteenth Muromachi shogun. Until the ninth family head departed Awa in 1805, the residence attracted literary figures and influenced local scholarship. The museum occupies that former site, offering a political and cultural story beyond a castle visit.
Explore family material and everyday objects
Displays combine material associated with the Awa Kubo with farming tools, fishing equipment and household objects. They connect the shogunal family’s story with the work of communities around the Naka River mouth. Part of the exhibition was renewed in 2024. In a compact museum, allow time to compare historical documents with the practical tools of local life.
Autumn displays of protective charms and belief
October 9–November 8, 2026 brings an exhibition on Awa Kubo protective snake charms, Ashikaga prestige and folk belief. Normally unseen charms, loans and related Nitta Iwamatsu cat drawings show how respect for the family became a form of belief. The display places these charms in the context of Edo-period beliefs and relationships of authority. Exhibition explanation is scheduled November 7, 10:00–11:00; admission remains free.
Visit on Friday–Sunday or a public holiday
Since April 2026, visits are free on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Opening is 09:00–16:30, last entry 16:00. Other weekdays, December 29–January 3 and special inventory days are closed. At 339-1 Furutsu, it is about fifteen minutes on foot from Nishibara Station or five minutes by car from the roadside station. Parking holds ten cars and one medium bus.
