Fukui City History Museum explores the castle town, figures of the late Edo period and the culture of the Echizen Matsudaira family. West of Yokokan Garden, it connects models and visual displays about the town with a walk to the former lord’s retreat. This is the municipal museum, distinct in location and administration from Fukui Prefectural Museum of Cultural History.

Fukui through models and Matsudaira collections
Permanent displays trace Fukui from the Jomon period to Showa through regional history, ancient life, the castle town and modern city, and figures of the late Edo and Meiji transition. Rotating Matsudaira-family and collection galleries explore regional culture from other perspectives. These three spaces form the ordinary displays; special exhibitions have their own admission prices.
The autumn Hokabe Kinshu exhibition
The October 10–November 23, 2026 special exhibition follows Fukui-born painter Hokabe Kinshu from lithographic work to beauty posters and portraiture. Its first selection ends October 29; after closure October 30, the second begins October 31. Admission is ¥900 for adults and ¥600 for high-school/university students, with ages 70+, junior-high pupils and younger, and eligible certificate holders and carers free. Presenting a ticket stub reduces repeat admission to ¥720 or ¥480.
Ordinary tickets, the garden and closure dates
Ordinary displays cost ¥220 or ¥160 for groups of at least twenty paying visitors. The garden combination ticket costs ¥350, or ¥260 for groups. Free opening on each third Sunday, November 3 and February 7 applies to ordinary displays, rather than automatically making special exhibitions free. There is no fixed weekly closure. Scheduled closures include October 30, November 24–27, December 14–15, 2026, and December 28–January 4, 2027.
Arrival via the castle site and indoor access
Walk about fifteen minutes from Fukui Station through the castle site, or ten from Shin-Fukui. Parking provides thirty car spaces and three bus spaces shared with Yokokan. A ramped entrance and accessible exhibition rooms are joined by accessible toilets on each floor. Wheelchair and stroller loans and a nursing/first-aid room are available. Closing moves from 19:00 to 17:00 on November 6, so allow for the earlier admission deadline when combining museum and garden.
