Mount Asuwa and the formation of Fukui
Permanent displays use a model of the three Asuwa hills and real specimens to explain the mountain’s formation, plants and animals. Geological displays follow the region’s history through fossils and strata; dioramas introduce environments from town and village to mountains, rivers and sea. The local hill walk gains a wider setting in Fukui’s landscapes.
The bird exhibition through October 25
The bird exhibition runs July 18–October 25, 2026. It explores links with dinosaurs, adaptations of bones and feathers for flight, and birds living in Fukui’s varied environments. Topics also include changes in local bird populations and the tools and places used for observation. Admission is ¥100; junior-high pupils and younger, ages 70+ and disabled visitors with one accompanying person enter free. The displays can be followed by looking and listening for birds on the hill.
November closure and ordinary free-admission dates
Fumigation closes the museum November 9–12, 2026. Regular closures are Mondays except public holidays, the next weekday after public holidays, and December 28–January 4. Ordinary admission is ¥100 from high-school age; groups of twenty including free entrants reduce the paying rate to ¥50. Free dates include each third Sunday, Culture Day and Fukui’s prefectural day. Upper-floor spaces including the special gallery require stairs; there is no lift.
Choosing a hill route and parking
Allow about thirty minutes on foot or ten by taxi from Fukui Station, or fifteen–twenty minutes on foot from Asuwayama-Koenguchi or Shoko-Kaigisho-mae stations, including slopes or steps. The museum’s east-side car park has twelve spaces; visitors avoiding steps are directed to four spaces near the broadcasting tower. The entrance approach and first floor are step-free. One wheelchair and one stroller are available to borrow. Drivers should follow the hill’s one-way roads.
