This nationally designated site combines the former lord’s residence with defensive works using steep mountain terrain. Excavated stonework and old approaches reveal a late-Sengoku castle. Visits extend beyond a level indoor building: begin at the foot-of-hill visitor centre, then select a route suited to fitness and the daylight available.

北条氏照の居館と要害をたどる
城は北条氏照によるもので、滝山城からの移転は1584～1587年頃とする説が有力です。1590年に前田利家・上杉景勝軍に攻められ落城しました。城下にあたる根小屋、御主殿を含む居館、山頂の本丸と周囲の曲輪からなる要害という構成です。御主殿地区の石垣、虎口、古道は発掘成果を基に整備され、登山をせず麓側の遺構を見学する行程も選べます。
案内施設と歩く前の準備
麓のガイダンス施設は映像やパネルで城と北条氏の歴史を紹介し、9～17時、入館無料です。休館は12月29日～1月3日などで、日本100名城スタンプもこちらにあります。2026年9月9日から山頂付近のトイレは閉鎖され、山上には他のトイレがありません。出発前に麓の管理棟や案内施設を利用し、山道に合う靴で整備された経路を歩けます。
11月のガイド再開予定
無料オフィシャルガイドは6月からの一時休止を経て11月再開予定です。再開後の案内は10～15時、最終受付14時、御主殿と案内施設を中心に約60～90分。周辺ではクマの目撃情報もあり、鈴などを携行し、野生動物を刺激せずに歩きます。
高尾駅からのバスと駐車場
JR高尾駅北口1番からバスで「霊園前・八王子城跡入口」下車、徒歩約20分。土日祝は城跡行きも運行します。無料駐車場と臨時駐車場はともに9～17時で時間外利用不可、大型バスは事前予約が必要です。車の案内先にはガイダンス施設の元八王子町3-2664-2を使います。管理棟の住所を入力すると適切に案内されない場合があります。
八王子市内で組み合わせる訪問先
八王子城跡では、山頂まで登る行程と御主殿跡周辺を回る行程で時間が変わり、駐車場へ17時までに戻る予定を取れます。高尾山口の宿やそば店、南浅川の囲炉裏料理へ向かう場合は、いったん車やバスで市内を移動します。展示と山歩き、食事の注文終了を合わせ、城跡から次の訪問先へ向かう時刻を決められます。
The lord’s residence and defensive mountain
Hojo Ujiteru built the castle, probably moving from Takiyama around 1584–1587. Forces of Maeda Toshiie and Uesugi Kagekatsu captured it in 1590. The layout includes the settlement area, palace residence and defensive summit enclosures. Palace stone walls, entrance works and the old approach were restored using excavation findings. A visit can focus on these lower remains without climbing to the summit.
The visitor centre before the walk
The visitor centre introduces the castle and Hojo history through films and panels, opening 9:00–17:00 free of charge. It closes December 29–January 3 and may close temporarily; the Japan 100 Castles stamp is located here. The summit-area toilet closed on September 9, 2026, leaving no other toilet on the mountain. Use the lower management building or centre before setting off in footwear suitable for mountain paths.
Guiding planned to resume in November
Free official guiding, suspended since June, is announced to resume in November. The advertised resumed service is 10:00–15:00, last reception 14:00, usually covering the palace and centre in 60–90 minutes. Bears have been reported nearby: carry a bell or other sound-making item and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Buses from Takao and daytime parking
Take a bus from stop 1 outside JR Takao’s north exit to Reienmae/Hachiojijo-ato-iriguchi, then walk about twenty minutes. Direct castle buses also run weekends and holidays. Both main and overflow free parking open 9:00–17:00 with no out-of-hours use; large buses require advance booking. Set navigation to the visitor centre at 3-2664-2 Motohachiojimachi, as the management-building address may produce an unsuitable approach.
Other stops to combine within Hachioji
A summit climb and a lower Goshuden-area walk at Hachioji Castle need different time, with return to parking by17:00. Accommodation and soba at Takaosanguchi, or irori dining in Minamiasakawa, require an onward city journey by car or bus. Coordinate exhibits, walking and food-order deadlines when deciding when to leave the castle.
