Discover Hakata through three buildings
The exhibition building presents Hakata history and culture downstairs, with household objects and craft demonstrations upstairs. The townhouse is a designated municipal cultural property, relocated and restored from a mid-Meiji weaving merchant’s home and workshop. The visitor building renewed in spring 2025 provides information, cultural experiences and hakatakara shopping and café facilities. Link architecture, everyday objects and handcraft.
Choose a day for demonstrations and craft
Hakata weaving demonstrations normally run 11:00–12:30 and 13:30–15:00, except Wednesdays and July–September. Separately charged craft sessions normally use 10:00–11:30 and 14:00–15:30: doll painting Friday–Monday, papier-mâché Tuesday, tops Wednesday and bentwood Thursday. Activities pause on closure days and December 29–31. Allow more time when combining a making session with the galleries.
Exhibition prices, summer hours and year-end closure
Exhibition admission is ¥200 adults, ¥150 for groups of twenty, and free for elementary/junior-high pupils. Eligible residents aged sixty-five or over in Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, Kumamoto or Kagoshima, and visitors with qualifying disabilities, receive free admission with evidence. Normal hours are 10:00–18:00, changing to 09:30–17:30 July–September, with last entry thirty minutes earlier. The fourth-Monday closure moves after a public holiday. December 28–31, 2026 are all closed.
Arrive by subway and continue on foot
Walk about four minutes from Kushida Shrine Station, five to six from Gion, or fifteen from Hakata. There is no on-site car park. The regular free walking tour is normally 14:00–15:00; the English tour is 11:00–12:00 with booking required, arriving ten minutes early. Visitor information operates 10:00–16:00 and hakatakara 09:30–17:30, separately from exhibition hours.
