Hida Takayama Town Museum uses fourteen galleries in former merchants’ storehouses to explore the castle town, festivals, daily life and art. Visiting before a walk through the historic streets gives context to buildings and crafts. Admission is free, and the galleries remain open into the early evening until 19:00.

Discover the castle town through merchants’ storehouses
Fourteen themed rooms occupy storehouses associated with the Yajima and Nagata merchant families. Subjects include the castle town’s formation, townhouses, Takayama Festival, traditional crafts and Enku. Look at the storehouse structure as well as the objects to experience both architecture and exhibition. Start with subjects that interest you, or return to a theme prompted by a walk through town.
Different hours for galleries and the garden
Galleries open 09:00–19:00, while the garden and grounds are accessible 07:00–21:00. Early-morning and later-evening visits therefore provide access to different areas from an exhibition visit. Admission is free, and the museum normally opens daily with occasional temporary closures. For a visit before dinner, finish the galleries by 19:00 rather than relying on the grounds’ later closing time.
Add guidance to the gallery visit
Multilingual visitor booklets are available. Volunteer guidance is offered mainly on weekends and holidays when the guide sign is displayed. Groups requesting exhibition guidance need to book at least ten days ahead. Use of the seminar room requires a separate application from gallery admission. Visitors can choose an independent circuit of the fourteen rooms or a visit enriched by an available guide.
Station access and nearby parking
The museum is at 75 Kamiichinomachi, about twenty minutes from Takayama Station’s east exit. The Machinami bus journey is around ten minutes, and the Takumi east–west service around eight. There is no general on-site parking; Ebisaka and Soramachi municipal car parks are about five minutes away on foot. Accessible parking is available by the main entrance. Large motorcycles cannot park here, and large buses cannot load or unload at the gate.
