Garden stones carried by trading ships
The fourth head of the family created Kakubuen in 1813. Its paths circle a pond and incorporate distant Mount Chokai into the scenery. The construction also provided winter employment for port workers. Stones carried by Kitamaebune trading ships include red stone from Sado and blue stone from Iyo. Seienkaku offers another perspective on the garden through carefully designed wooden interiors, making the transition between indoors and outdoors part of the visit.
Autumn 2026 exhibitions and evening opening

Night Museum opening on October 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 extends visits until 19:00, with last admission at 18:30. The exhibition building and Seienkaku also remain open for these illuminated garden evenings.

There is no regular closing day from March to November; winter Tuesday and Wednesday closures move to the following day for holidays. Installation may close only the exhibition building.
