Two architectural traditions in a 1768 house
The third head of the Honma family built the residence in 1768. It was presented to the Sakai family for receiving shogunate inspectors, and later became the Honma family home. Its distinctive feature is the combination of samurai and merchant architectural traditions in a single building. Comparing the formal gate and reception rooms with the domestic areas helps explain how different parts of the house were used.
An old pine, trading stones and the Tana annex
The garden contains the Garyu red pine, more than four hundred years old, and stones transported by Kitamaebune trading ships. Inside, materials such as zelkova and ancient buried cedar reward a closer look. Across the road, the Tana annex displays ledgers, scales, lamps, kitchen equipment and firefighting tools. These practical objects complement the reception rooms by showing how the merchant household operated.
2026 admission and autumn displays
Admission following the April 1, 2026 revision is ¥1,100 for adults, ¥300 for junior and senior high school students and ¥200 for elementary school children. Groups of at least 15 pay ¥990, ¥270 and ¥180. An individual ¥2,000 combined ticket links the residence with Homma Museum of Art in Onaricho. The autumn doll exhibition began September 18; seasonal displays include dolls dating from the Edo through Showa periods.
Allow time before the house closes
Opening is 9:30–16:30 from March to October and 9:30–16:00 from November to February. A visit takes around forty to fifty minutes, so arrive with enough time for the garden and annex as well as the main house. No closure is scheduled for October 2026. The annual winter closure runs from mid-December to late January, with additional installation closures. Winter opening hours apply only on days when the residence is open.
