A residence restored to its 1905 appearance
The former naval commandant’s residence was restored using evidence of its 1905 appearance and designated an Important Cultural Property in 1998. The single-storey timber building joins Western rooms to the east with Japanese rooms to the west. Half-timbering, fish-scale slate roofing and British stained glass distinguish the exterior. Looking from the building as a whole to individual rooms reveals its combined architectural styles.
Gilded paper and the work of Takashi Ueda
Kinkarakami is embossed Japanese paper finished with metal leaf and colour, decorating the Western rooms’ walls and ceilings. From February 4 to December 27, 2026, an exhibition in the historical-display building presents the work of Takashi Ueda, who revived the technique for heritage restoration. Screens and patterned panels complement the residence’s interior, showing the craft behind its conservation.
The annex and arsenal clock
A relocated annex preserves part of the house used by Heihachiro Togo during his Kure posting. A roughly ten-metre clock tower originally installed on the naval arsenal in 1921 has faces on all four sides. Its four daily melodies are selected annually from pupils’ compositions. Ordinary admission is ¥250, ¥150 or ¥100 by age group, with group rates ¥200, ¥120 or ¥80. Eligible local pupils and certificate holders receive exemptions.
Walking from the station and entering the residence
Walk around thirteen minutes from Kure Station or fifteen from Yamato Museum. Buses stop at Irifuneyama Koen, or at Meganebashi three minutes away. Open 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30; closed Tuesdays or the following day after a holiday, and December 29–January 3. The park’s 122-space car park costs ¥100 per hour, with a separate free twelve-bus lot. Staff provide a ramp at the residence entrance for wheelchair access.
