A castle building above the stone walls
Kameyama Castle is said to have been built by Okamoto Munenori in 1590. After the keep was removed, the Tamon Yagura remained above the main bailey’s high stone walls, its white plaster and hipped-gable roof marking the site.
It is described as Mie Prefecture’s only surviving castle building and is designated a prefectural historic site. Looking at the tower and stonework together helps explain the castle’s defensive setting and its place in the townscape.
The former Tamon Yagura opens 10:00–16:00 on weekends
The former Tamon Yagura opens to visitors from 10:00 to 16:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Admission is free, and visitors can go inside when the tower is open.
It is closed to visitors from December 29 through January 3. The city notes that special circumstances can change the opening schedule, so check its latest information for your visit date.
Read the castle’s changing history on site
The Tamon Yagura stands above the main bailey’s high stone walls, preserving part of Kameyama Castle after its keep was removed. Viewing the surviving structure and stonework together helps show how the castle and its surrounding town developed.
The city also lists other nearby historic properties, including the former Tate residence and the Kato family compound remains, which open on selected weekends and holidays. Their hours differ from the Tamon Yagura’s, so check each listing before combining visits.
About ten minutes from the station; check opening dates
Kameyama Castle is about a ten-minute walk from JR Kameyama Station and around a ten-minute drive from Kameyama IC on the Meihan National Highway.
The Tamon Yagura interior opens only on weekends and public holidays, so an exterior visit and an interior visit are different plans. Follow local signs and take care around the historic structure and its grounds.
