Three galleries tracing Yamato history
The institute has investigated sites in Nara since 1938. Its permanent exhibition uses original archaeological material to trace the Palaeolithic through the Muromachi period. Gallery One covers hunting tools, Jomon settlement and gathering, and Yayoi rice cultivation and ritual vessels. Gallery Two explores the Yamato polity, burial mounds, Fujinoki Tomb and different coffin forms. Gallery Three turns to ancient capitals, Buddhist temples, changing burial practices and medieval life. Following the sequence connects shifts in everyday activity with political organisation and belief.
Horses, equipment and conservation
From October 3 to November 29, 2026, Horses and Horse Equipment presents the second exhibition of results from conservation of the National Treasure finds from Fujinoki Tomb. Restored horse equipment, including material rarely displayed, introduces both the objects and the investigation behind their preservation. Decoration and form can be considered alongside conservation and analysis. During this period, the special-exhibition ticket is required even when visiting only the permanent galleries. November 14 and 15 are free-admission Kansai Culture Day dates within the exhibition run.
Choosing the appropriate admission category
Regular admission is ¥400 adults, ¥300 university and high-school students, and ¥200 primary and junior-high pupils. The autumn 2026 special exhibition costs ¥1,000, ¥450 and ¥300 respectively; groups of twenty or more pay ¥500, ¥350 and ¥250. The museum provides free admission, with proof, for eligible domestic visitors under eighteen or in high school, and eligible disabled visitors with one caregiver. The weekday exemption for visitors aged sixty-five or older applies to permanent exhibitions rather than special-exhibition pricing. A video library, information area, lounge and shop also provide free-access facilities outside the paid galleries.
Station approaches and closures
Opening is 9:00–17:00, entry until 16:30. Monday holidays are open, with closure the following day; December 28–January 4 is closed. November 23, 2026 is open for the holiday and November 24 is closed; December 1 is an additional closure. Unebigoryomae Station west exit is about five minutes away on foot, and Kashiharajingu-mae central exit about fifteen. Parking accommodates approximately forty vehicles. Eating inside is prohibited except in the courtyard. Allowing time for both exhibition areas and keeping meals separate from gallery visits helps organise a full visit.
