Learning about a place of refuge
During the Edo period, Mantokuji and Kamakura's Tokeiji were convents granted special privileges to assist women seeking divorce. Displays explain mikudarihan separation letters and relationships between the temple and women pursuing release from marriage. They invite consideration of women's actions within the social system. Mantokuji was abolished in 1872; today the grounds operate as an archaeological park and museum interpreting that historical role.
Its role as a Tokugawa memorial temple
The exhibition running October 3–November 29, 2026 focuses on Mantokuji as a memorial temple holding Tokugawa ancestral tablets. Beyond its divorce-related role, the convent received Ieyasu's protection and maintained links with the shogun's inner household. Traditions surround its foundation and Princess Senhime, while historical records illuminate other aspects of its activity. The exhibition adds the shogunal family and the work of abbesses to the story of refuge and separation.
The free archaeological park and hall
The archaeological park reconstructs the main hall, gate and garden, complementing the indoor museum displays. The museum charges admission, but the park and restored hall are free. Both nevertheless share opening hours of 9:30–17:00 and final entry at 16:30 rather than allowing unrestricted all-day access. Pets are prohibited throughout the grounds, including the park. Moving from documents indoors to the buildings and garden gives physical context to the temple's history.
Group arrangements and finding the parking area
Admission is ¥200, or ¥160 per person for groups of twenty or more; junior-high pupils and younger are free. Closed Mondays, the following day after a Monday holiday, and December 29–January 3. Groups of twenty or more normally reserve; any party wanting a guided explanation should book roughly a month ahead. For navigation, use the visitor parking name Enkiridera Mantokuji Iseki Chushajo rather than the temple name alone.
