Kura no Eki uses the former Ishihei hardware merchant’s house as a visitor-information and heritage facility. Walk through its deep plan towards the inner storehouse, hidden behind the street frontage. Local products and town-walk information make it a practical first stop before deciding which other Masuda buildings to visit.

Follow the merchant house into its inner storehouse
Donated to the city by the Ishida hardware-merchant family, the house illustrates Masuda’s practice of enclosing a storehouse within the main building. A narrow frontage opens into a deep sequence of shop, reception and living rooms, service area and kura, linked by a passage along the south side. The route through spaces for commerce and everyday life helps explain how an inner storehouse differs from a detached building.
Look for construction phases and the upper level
Extensions and rebuilding produced the present house. The older service area retains layered beams and adze marks; the kura is thought to date from the late nineteenth century, with construction and dimensions differing from the front rooms. This is one of the buildings where visitors can reach the storehouse’s upper level, including a protective arrow near the ridge beam. Comparing finishes and framing reveals successive stages of the merchant property.
Choose further houses and guided walks
The former shop provides brochures, visitor information, local products and books. Masuda includes both advance-booking and walk-in houses, with admission charged at some and free at others. Guided walks require application at least a week ahead: one guide for one to fifteen people costs ¥3,000, two for sixteen to thirty cost ¥6,000. Allow roughly twenty to thirty minutes per house when selecting a realistic walking route.
Bus access, luggage and opening times
Open 09:00–17:00, closed December 29–January 3. Drive or take a taxi about ten minutes from Jumonji Station, or use the Masuda Kura no Eki-mae bus stop. Free municipal parking is nearby. The community lounge opposite the stop and Hotaru information centre have ¥100-return lockers; other luggage storage is unavailable. Plan baggage around the lockers, storehouse stairs and walking portions of the visit.
Other stops to combine within Yokote
The station area, Masuda/Jumonji, Hiraka, Omonogawa, Omori, Taiyu and Sannai involve different directions of travel. Combine sightseeing and meal deadlines with the intended accommodation arrival time. Related parking serves its own facility or area as a stopping point.
