Tracing the history of Matsuyama Domain
Matsuyama Domain began in 1647 when Tadatsune, the third son of Shonai lord Sakai Tadakatsu, received his own territory. Armour, maps and other surviving records introduce the domain's development. Comparing these materials with the surrounding landscape reveals a history different from that of Sakata's port district. The original museum building opened in 1982 and the newer wing in 1998.
Meeting the district's artists and thinkers
The museum also introduces people and artists associated with the district. Its spaces include a temporary exhibition room and a memorial room dedicated to local painter Keiji Mashimo. The Kanbe Glass and Fusha exhibition runs September 11–November 8, 2026, adding contemporary craft to the visit alongside the historical material. The changing programme reflects the museum's role in preserving and presenting local culture.
Admission and choosing an opening day
Admission is ¥400 for adults and university students, ¥280 for high school students and ¥120 for elementary and junior high school children; preschool children enter free. Groups of at least 20 pay ¥310, ¥240 and ¥100. Hours are 9:00–16:30. Monday closures move to the next non-holiday weekday when Monday is a public holiday. The museum also closes December 29–January 3 and during exhibition installation.
Walking the historical park and castle gate
The adjoining Matsuyama Historical Park is free to explore and includes the castle's Otemon gate. Starting with the gate and park before moving to the museum can help place the records in their former castle-town setting. The museum has parking and is about thirty minutes by car from Sakata Station or Shonai Airport. The combination of historical displays, regional art and outdoor remains makes it a useful focus for a visit to Matsuyama.
